LSWR advanced to the MARFU DII championship weekend after beating Mary Washington 49-0 at McCarthy Stadium. Despite a yellow card for repeated infractions during the second half of the game, the visitors could not penetrate the Explorers' defense.Flanker Julia Walsh touched down four times to lead the Explorers in scoring. La Salle wasted no time pressuring Mary Washington. Off the opening kickoff the Explorers strung together several phases punctuated in a line-break but the visiting team made good use of the sideline to corral the Explorers wide attack. LSWR adjusted to Mary Washington's excellent cover defense by exploiting vertical holes out wide and sending several players in support when turning the corner.
The Explorers were on attack for much of the game because of superb phase play defense. Pressure on defense provided LSWR with turn overs at the break down or forced handling errors. These errors were punished at scrum time by a combination of counter drive and fantastic pressure defense, led by scrumhalf Jessica Wallace and freshman flanker Alexis Piazza. Mary Washington had trouble finding touch when kicking to relieve pressure. This led to several La Salle successful counteract movements, one ending in a try.
La Salle struggled with penalties after the tackle. Midway through the second half the sir had enough of the repeated infractions and sin binned a player. Mary Washington sensed an opening and pushed La Salle to the brink, missing a penalty kick and camping out insided the La Salle 22 for several minutes. But that was as close as Mary Washington would come to scoring.
La Salle moves on to face Georgetown in their MARFU semifinal match. Last time the two teams met LSWR defated Georgetown 27-0 in route to their first national playoff appearance.
