Temple Rallies to Win MARFU Championship PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 March 2010 01:44

La Salle lost a heart breaker at the whistle to Temple University, 20-15. Temple bested the Explorers on two unconverted tries in the last five minutes of play, including one try at the dead time mark. La Salle will advance as the MARFU #2 seed, ranked 4th overall in the USA Rugby DII National Championship bracket. Temple claims both the MARFU championship and #1 seed in the country with the win.

Temple was on the defensive for much of the first half. The Explorers had the bulk of the possession and scored on an early forwards try by prop Nicole Henriquez. Jessica Wallance found the try zone after another forwards sequence to increase the LSWR lead to 10-0. A combination of excellent team defense and dominance in the set pieces masked handling issues in the La Salle backline. The inability to consistently attack out wide attributed to several trips inside the Temple 22 meter line without scoring points. Late in the first half Temple used their excellent mid field attack to generate a well supported line break, making it a 10-5 game.
