La Salle Finishes 1-1 in Second Trip to Nationals PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 April 2010 20:49
LSWR went 1-1 at this weekend's USA Rugby National DII Collegiate Championships. La Salle lost their opening round game to UC Santa Cruz, 38-20 before rebounding to shut out Claremont Colleges 26-0.

For the Explorers the weekend was one of discovery but frustration, as the team began to peak in the second half of both games.

UCSC is no stranger to the national playoff scene, having won, finished second and made the quarter finals in three previous years. LSWR paid dearly for poor decisions and execution in their kicking game, matched by some equally poor recoveries from turnover and penalty ball. The Explorer phase defense was consistent throughout most of the game and produced numerous scoring opportunities. However the visitors from North Philadelphia did not convert on several long stints inside their opponents 22, including several penalties.

LSWR rallied on Sunday by defeating Claremont colleges 26-0. The game was penalty filled affair during the first half of play, seeing two Explorers and one Claremont player sent to the sin bin. These penalties prevented La Salle from capitalizing on an otherwise succesfull first half. The second half saw a flood of replacements for the Explorers, has many freshman and first semester rookies joined their more seasoned teammates. Senior Maria Muscara was a decisive impact sub, finding the try zone on offense and the leading the line on defense.
