La Salle Defeats Rutgers in Playoff Warmup
Match Reports
Monday, 09 March 2009 12:48

LSWR defeated Rutgers 32-10 Friday night in New Brunswick. The Explorers found their rhythm early,  despite missing starting scrumhalf Jessica Wallace, flanker Pattie Flanagan and wing/center Maria Muscara. Rutgers punished La Salle for letting up early in the second half before the Explorers regained the momentum, scoring three more unanswered tries.

For the second weekend in a row LSWR found themselves tested off the pitch. Despite the team's best efforts, the evening rush hour created less than ideal traveling conditions. Player straggled in, leaving no or little time for a team warmup. Rutgers was a very gracious host and pushed back the kick off time by 30 minutes to accommodate the travel difficulties.

La Salle proved discourteous guests as they surged in the opening minutes of the contest. Freshman Julia Walsh had a standout game for the Explorers. Rutgers struggled to contain the flanker with ball in hand and couldn't escape her in defensive phase play or off of scrums. Senior, eight man Christina Foley proved a formidable force at scrumhalf. She was aided by the strong work of the La Salle tight forwards, led by an especially physical performance by junior Mary-Kate Kimiecik.

The Explorers will have a bye weekend for spring break before facing Longwood University in their first ever MARFU playoff game.
