La Salle Advances to MARFU Semifinals
Match Reports
Monday, 23 March 2009 02:12

The Explorers advanced to the MARFU semifinals with a 29-20 victory against Longwood University. LSWR made the long trek to Farmerville with 18 healthy players. The visitors were tested by the adverse conditions, a relentlessness Longwood side and an inability to avoid penalties.

The Explorers started the match shaky, playing the first 20 minutes in their own end, often in the shadow of their goal posts. From the onset La Salle was unable to avoid the match official's wrath, leading to several attempts at goal by their opponent. However, Longwood converted only one attempt at goal. La Salle's red zone defense proved stalwart and if not for early handling errors on offense, the initial Longwood surge might have been shorter.

Mid way through the first half La Salle broke through and played on their opponent's side of the field. The Explorers found their attacking rhythm and methodically moved towards their opponents goal line. After several unconverted line breaks the La Salle Forwards finally punched the ball in. La Salle went ahead 5-3, a lead they would not relinquish.

The remainder of the game saw the Explorer dominate possession, only to give it away through penalties. The LSWR defense maintained their aggression though, forcing turnovers and yielding excellent attacking opportunities. This was countered by Longwood punishing the  Explorer's penalty missteps. In the end La Salle out lasted both their opponents and the referee to earn the difficult road victory.

Head coach Kristin Aliberto wasn't surprised by the weekend's challenges. "Looking at this game in November we knew that it would be challenging mentally and logisitically. Great teams find ways to win when they're missing players, traveling long distances or encountering issues with the officiating. We had a number of players step up in the abensence of unavailable teammates. Veroncia Sacchetti was excellent in her first game at flanker and hooker Liz Romagano continues to seem like a seasoned player despite playing in only her second game."

La Salle now advances to face EPRU rival Delaware in the MARFU DII semifinals. Delaware advanced to the semifinals by blanking Potomic Rugby Union 2 seed Towson, 29-0. The winner of the game will face either heavily favored Shippensburg, 62-0 winners over Virginia Commonwealth, or Georgetown, 20-10 winners over Mary Washington.
